Overview
Penetration testers (pentesters) are authorised hackers who probe systems for vulnerabilities before malicious attackers do — web apps, mobile apps, network infrastructure, cloud configurations, IoT devices. India has a fast-growing offensive-security ecosystem with major hiring at SISA, Lucideus, Aujas, Trend Micro, Microland, plus boutique firms (Beagle Security, NotSoSecure, Astra). Global capability centres at Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco, Mastercard run red teams from India. CEH, OSCP, and OSCE are the dominant credentials.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Conduct scoped penetration tests (black-box, grey-box, white-box); exploit vulnerabilities to demonstrate real impact; write detailed pentest reports with reproducible steps and remediation; perform threat modelling and red-team exercises; review code for security flaws (SAST); run dynamic analysis (DAST) and fuzzing; participate in bug-bounty programmes; advise development teams on secure-coding practices; maintain CVE awareness and 0-day research.
Skills required
- Web app testing (Burp Suite, OWASP ZAP)
- Network penetration (Nmap, Metasploit, Cobalt Strike)
- Mobile app testing (Frida, Objection)
- Reverse engineering and binary exploitation
- Cloud security (AWS / Azure / GCP misconfigurations)
- Scripting (Python, Bash, PowerShell)
- Active Directory exploitation
- Report writing (technical + executive)
Education path
B.Tech CSE/IT or B.Sc Cyber Security. Self-taught entry very common via bug-bounty platforms (HackerOne, Bugcrowd) building reputation publicly. Bootcamps and certifications often substitute for degree at boutique firms. OSCP (Offensive Security Certified Professional) is the gold-standard hands-on credential; CEH is the entry-level branded credential. Master's in Cybersecurity for advanced research roles.
