Bharati Vidyapeeth was founded in Pune in 1964 by Dr. Patangrao Kadam, who started out coaching school students in English and Mathematics from a single room in the old part of the city. The organisation grew through the following decades, adding schools and professional colleges across Maharashtra and later expanding into Delhi and Navi Mumbai, an origin that still shapes its focus on first-generation and rural learners.
On April 26, 1996, the Government of India, acting on a University Grants Commission recommendation, granted Deemed to be University status to a cluster of 12 Bharati Vidyapeeth institutions, creating Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University (BVDU). The UGC classifies BVDU as a Category-I Deemed to be University, a status that gives it more autonomy over curriculum design, new programme approval and examinations than a standard affiliated college.
BVDU today operates as a multi-campus, multi-faculty university with eight campuses across Pune, New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Karad, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur. It is organised into 12 faculties covering medicine, dentistry, engineering, management, law, pharmacy, nursing, Ayurveda, homeopathy and allied disciplines, running more than 160 academic programmes for over 23,000 students, taught by a faculty of more than 1,600.
BVDU holds an A++ grade from NAAC and was ranked 59th in the NIRF 2025 University category with a score of 51.37, up from rank 78 the previous year. The university also runs five dedicated research institutes covering health sciences, biotechnology, information technology, applied chemistry and social sciences, alongside sponsored research and consultancy work carried out across its constituent schools.
Most undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across BVDU's campuses admit students through the Bharati Vidyapeeth Common Entrance Test (BVP-CET), a university-run entrance exam held separately for different programme groups. Merit and sports scholarships covering 50 to 100 percent of tuition are available to high scorers, alongside Maharashtra government freeship and concession schemes for SC, ST, OBC and economically weaker section students.
The UGC classifies BVDU as a Category-I Deemed to be University, letting it design curricula and launch new programmes with more autonomy than a standard affiliated college.
BVDU currently holds NAAC's highest A++ grade, its accreditation covering the university as a whole rather than individual colleges.
The university runs 160+ programmes across 12 faculties, including medicine, dentistry, engineering, law, management and pharmacy, mostly admitted through one common entrance test, BVP-CET.
BVDU operates eight campuses across Pune, New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Karad, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur, giving students access to the same university in multiple Indian states.
Alongside its teaching schools, BVDU runs five dedicated research institutes in health sciences, biotechnology, information technology, applied chemistry and social sciences.
Honest caveat: Bharati Vidyapeeth is a sprawling group with dozens of colleges, and only some of them are actually part of the Deemed University itself. Others, such as Bharati Vidyapeeth's College of Engineering in Delhi, are separate colleges affiliated to a different university (GGSIPU) and carry the Bharati Vidyapeeth name without being BVDU constituents, which makes it easy for prospective students to confuse the two. Fee, cutoff and placement data for individual professional programmes is also managed separately by each constituent school rather than published at the umbrella university level.
