Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is a deemed-to-be university under India's Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), notified on 3 June 2005 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. HBNI is not a single teaching campus. It is the degree-granting umbrella for ten Constituent Institutions (CIs) and three Off-Campus Centres (OCCs), DAE and DAE-linked research institutes where students actually study and do their research, while HBNI itself confers the MSc, PhD, and Integrated PhD degrees.
The ten Constituent Institutions are Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai; Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam; Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore; Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata; Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP), Kolkata; Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar; Institute of Physics (IoP), Bhubaneswar; Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI), Prayagraj; Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai; and Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai.
The three Off-Campus Centres are National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar; Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre, Varanasi; and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, New Chandigarh. HBNI's registered office is at the Knowledge Management Group, Central Complex, BARC Training School Complex, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400094, on the BARC campus.

Admission into HBNI-conferred degrees runs through each constituent institute rather than a single centralised HBNI application. JEST is the primary entrance route for MSc, PhD, and Integrated PhD seats in physics, theoretical computer science, neuroscience, and computational biology at institutes such as IMSc, HRI, IPR, and SINP. Other constituent institutes admit via GATE (for MTech-style postgraduate programmes), CSIR-NET (for PhD), or their own institute-specific written tests and interviews. Our database currently lists 25 course rows for this college spanning these constituent-institute specializations; because HBNI is an umbrella degree-granting body, these programmes are physically delivered and researched at the individual DAE institutes named above, not at one HBNI teaching campus.

HBNI has no single campus or hostel system of its own. Students are admitted to and reside at whichever constituent institute or off-campus centre hosts their programme, for example BARC's Anushaktinagar campus in Mumbai, IMSc in Chennai, or IPR in Gandhinagar, each with its own hostel, library, and research facilities. "Campus life" at HBNI is therefore the campus life of the specific DAE institute a student is placed at, not a unified university experience, and prospective applicants should look at the individual constituent institute's own facilities rather than a generic HBNI campus.
HBNI confers MSc, PhD, and Integrated PhD degrees for research carried out at DAE institutes such as BARC, IGCAR, RRCAT, and VECC, giving students access to national-lab infrastructure not available at a typical university department.
HBNI ranked 7th in NIRF's Research category in 2025 (score 69.39), 6th in 2024 (score 70.11), and 15th in 2023 (score 58.88), consistently the highest-placed research institution outside the IITs and IISc.
Programmes span nuclear and reactor engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics, plasma science, and oncology, delivered through specialist institutes like IMSc (mathematics), IPR (plasma physics), and Tata Memorial Centre (oncology) rather than one generalist campus.
Admission to HBNI's MSc and Integrated PhD programmes runs mainly through JEST (Joint Entrance Screening Test) for physics, theoretical computer science, and related areas, with GATE and CSIR-NET used for other MSc/PhD entry routes depending on the constituent institute and subject.
HBNI's University-category NIRF rank improved from 17th (2023, score 59.31) to 16th (2024, score 62.31) to 12th (2025, score 65.08), a steady multi-year climb.
