National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra, commonly known as NITKKR, was established in 1963 as the Regional Engineering College (REC) Kurukshetra under a Government of India initiative for technical education, one of the eight RECs jointly set up by the central and state governments. It was redesignated the National Institute of Technology in 2002 and subsequently declared an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act, with authority to award its own B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, and PhD degrees. The 300-acre campus is at Thanesar, Kurukshetra, Haryana 136119, approximately 5 km from Kurukshetra railway station and well connected by road to Delhi (~160 km) and Chandigarh (~90 km).

Honest caveat: NIT Kurukshetra's NIRF Engineering rank has declined significantly from 58 (2023) to 81 (2024) to 85 (2025), while absolute scores fell from 54.95 to 47.98, reflecting pressure from rising competition and a relatively weak Research and Professional Practice sub-score (RPC: 37.48 in 2025). The overall placement median is Rs 10 LPA in 2024-25; Civil Engineering averaged Rs 7.71 LPA and Production and Industrial Engineering are materially below the CSE and IT averages.
