Overview
Anesthesiologists are medical doctors specialising in pain management, sedation, and life-support during surgical procedures. They administer anaesthesia (general, regional, local), manage perioperative care, lead ICU intensive care, and run pain clinics. Anaesthesia is the most quietly critical OT role — patient survival often hinges on the anaesthetist's vigilance. Indian demand has grown sharply with the boom in elective surgeries, day-care procedures, and the rise of pain medicine. Surgical hospital chains compete for trained anaesthesiologists.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Conduct pre-operative anaesthesia assessment of patients; plan anaesthesia technique (general, spinal, epidural, MAC); administer and titrate drugs intraoperatively; monitor vital signs continuously; manage emergencies in the OT (anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, malignant hyperthermia); provide post-operative analgesia; lead surgical ICU; manage pain-clinic outpatients; consult on labour analgesia (epidurals).
