Overview
Cardiologists diagnose and treat heart and vascular diseases — interventional cardiology (angiography, angioplasty, stenting), electrophysiology (rhythm disorders), and cardiac imaging. India has ~5,000 active interventional cardiologists, far below demand given the country's growing CVD burden (28% of all deaths). High-volume cath labs operate at Apollo, Fortis, Narayana Hrudayalaya (Bengaluru's heart-specialty hospital), AIIMS, and the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute (SCTIMST Trivandrum). Pay is among the highest in Indian medicine.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Conduct outpatient consultations and echocardiography; perform invasive procedures (angiogram, angioplasty, pacemaker insertion); interpret ECGs, Holter monitoring, stress tests; manage cardiac emergencies (STEMI, ACS) in the cath lab; conduct ward rounds for inpatients; participate in heart-team meetings with cardiac surgeons; mentor DM trainees; engage in continuing medical education.
