Overview
Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (Ob-Gyns) are MD specialists in women's reproductive health and pregnancy care. The pathway covers obstetrics (pregnancy, labour, delivery), gynaecology (reproductive system disorders, contraception, menopause), reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and gynaecologic oncology. India has a sustained shortage of Ob-Gyns relative to its female population — particularly in tier-2/3 cities. Maternal mortality reduction goals under government schemes (Janani Suraksha Yojana, PM Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan) plus the booming private fertility-treatment market (Indira IVF, Nova IVF Fertility, Cloudnine, Fortis La Femme) drive strong demand.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Conduct antenatal check-ups and prenatal counselling; perform deliveries (normal, C-section, instrumental); manage gynaecological conditions (PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, infections); perform gynaecological surgeries (hysterectomy, myomectomy, laparoscopic procedures); provide infertility treatment (IUI, IVF if fellowship-trained); manage menopausal care; conduct cancer screenings (PAP smear, mammography referrals); counsel on contraception and family planning; participate in maternal mortality reviews.
