Overview
Mechatronics Engineers work at the intersection of mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control systems — designing automated systems, robots, smart factories, and embedded mechatronic products. Distinct from robotics engineers (who focus on autonomous robots), mechatronics engineers work on broader industrial-automation systems. India's manufacturing modernisation under PLI schemes (semiconductors, EV, electronics) has driven sharp demand at Bosch, Siemens, ABB, Mitsubishi Electric, Yaskawa, Tata Group manufacturing companies, and the growing factory-automation system-integrator ecosystem.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design integrated mechanical-electronic-software systems for automation; develop PLC and SCADA programs (Siemens TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley); integrate sensors, actuators, motors, drives; design control systems using MATLAB / Simulink; commission and troubleshoot automated production lines; develop HMI (Human-Machine Interface) systems; implement Industry 4.0 features (IoT, digital twin, predictive maintenance); coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers; conduct factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT).
Skills required
- Mechanical design (CAD — SolidWorks, NX, CATIA)
- Electronics and embedded systems
- Control systems and PID tuning
- PLC programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi)
- SCADA and HMI design (WinCC, Ignition, FactoryTalk)
- Industrial communication protocols (Modbus, EtherCAT, PROFINET)
