Overview
Medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) perform the diagnostic tests that doctors rely on for treatment decisions: blood chemistry, microbiology, histopathology, molecular diagnostics. India's diagnostic chain industry has grown rapidly (Dr Lal PathLabs, Metropolis, Thyrocare, Apollo Diagnostics, Suburban Diagnostics) creating sustained MLT demand. Government hospitals, private hospital labs, blood banks, and the rapidly growing molecular diagnostics segment (post-COVID infrastructure) all hire MLTs.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Collect blood, urine, and tissue samples from patients; operate haematology analysers, biochemistry analysers, immunoassay platforms, and microbiology equipment; prepare and stain histopathology slides; carry out PCR and other molecular tests; ensure quality control and instrument calibration; maintain LIMS records; report critical values to clinicians; comply with NABL accreditation standards.
