Overview
Metallurgical and materials engineers work on the extraction, processing, and characterisation of metals and engineering materials. The Indian steel sector (Tata Steel, JSW, SAIL, JSPL, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam) is the world's second-largest by output. Beyond steel, demand spans aluminium (Hindalco, NALCO, Vedanta), copper (Hindustan Copper, Vedanta), defence and aerospace alloys (DRDO, MIDHANI), automotive components, and the emerging EV battery materials supply chain. The role is technically deep and specialised.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Operate and optimise pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes (blast furnace, BOF, electric arc, electrolysis); analyse material microstructure (optical microscopy, SEM, XRD); conduct mechanical testing (tensile, hardness, fatigue, creep); develop heat treatment cycles for specific properties; troubleshoot quality issues in production; lead R&D on new alloys and process improvements; ensure compliance with quality standards (BIS, JIS, ASTM); coordinate with mining and downstream processing teams.
