Overview
Mobile app developers build native iOS and Android applications, or cross-platform apps using React Native or Flutter. India has the world's largest smartphone user base outside China, and mobile-first product strategy dominates the consumer internet sector (e-commerce, fintech, social, content). Strong demand at consumer product companies plus growing demand at enterprise mobile-app teams.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Build mobile UI components with native (Swift / SwiftUI for iOS; Kotlin / Jetpack Compose for Android) or cross-platform (React Native, Flutter); integrate REST and GraphQL APIs; manage local storage and offline sync; optimise app size, battery usage, and crash-free rate; integrate payment SDKs (Razorpay, Stripe), analytics (Mixpanel, Amplitude), and push notification platforms; submit and maintain apps on App Store and Play Store.
Skills required
- Swift / Kotlin (one or both depending on stack)
- React Native or Flutter (cross-platform path)
- iOS Human Interface Guidelines / Material Design
- REST / GraphQL API integration
- Local storage (SQLite, Realm, AsyncStorage)
- Performance profiling (Xcode Instruments, Android Profiler)
- App Store / Play Store deployment
- Push notifications and deep linking
Education path
B.Tech CSE / IT, BCA + MCA, or self-taught mobile developers. Many native iOS engineers move to mobile from Mac/iOS hobbyist backgrounds; many Android engineers come from Java backend backgrounds. Strong mobile portfolio (3 to 5 published apps) materially improves hiring outcomes.
