Overview
Pathologists are MD doctors who diagnose diseases by examining tissues, blood, and bodily fluids in the laboratory — histopathology, cytology, haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, molecular pathology. They are the doctors behind every cancer diagnosis, every infection identification, every blood-test interpretation. Distinct from medical lab technologists (who perform tests), pathologists do the interpretation. Indian diagnostic chains (Dr Lal PathLabs, Metropolis, SRL, Thyrocare, Apollo Diagnostics) plus the molecular pathology growth (PCR, NGS, sequencing) drive sustained demand.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Examine and report tissue biopsies (histopathology); interpret cytology slides (PAP smear, fine-needle aspiration); review haematology slides and bone marrow aspirates; interpret immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology (PCR, FISH, NGS) results; sign out clinical chemistry reports; consult with clinicians on complex cases; conduct frozen sections during surgery; supervise medical lab technologists and PG residents; participate in tumour boards; manage laboratory accreditation (NABL).
Skills required
- Microscopy and pattern recognition for histology / cytology
- Knowledge of pathology of all body systems
- Haematology and bone marrow interpretation
- Immunohistochemistry interpretation
- Molecular pathology (PCR, FISH, NGS)
- Laboratory quality management (NABL standards)
- Clinico-pathological correlation
- Report writing for clinicians
