Overview
Prompt engineers (also called LLM specialists or AI engineers) design, optimise, and operationalise prompts for large language models. The role emerged in late 2022 with ChatGPT's rise and has solidified as enterprises adopt LLMs at scale. Indian demand spans foundation-model startups (Sarvam AI, Krutrim, Ola Krutrim), AI-native product companies, Big 4 AI advisory practices, and traditional enterprises building LLM-powered features. Distinct from ML engineers (who train models from scratch) — prompt engineers focus on getting maximum value from already-trained models through systematic prompt design, RAG pipelines, fine-tuning strategies, and evaluation frameworks.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design and iterate on prompts for production LLM features; build and maintain RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) pipelines; design evaluation frameworks (LLM-as-judge, golden datasets, automated metrics); fine-tune open-source models (Llama, Mistral) when needed; collaborate with product managers on AI feature scoping; manage LLM costs and latency budgets; conduct red-team testing for safety; document prompt patterns and best practices; stay current with rapidly evolving model capabilities.
Skills required
- Prompt engineering patterns (few-shot, chain-of-thought, ReAct)
- LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini)
- RAG pipelines and vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate, pgvector)
- Frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel)
- Fine-tuning (LoRA, QLoRA on Hugging Face)
- Evaluation (Ragas, Promptfoo, custom benchmarks)
- Python and JavaScript
- Cost and latency optimisation
Education path
Entry is non-linear. Many prompt engineers come from software engineering, data science, content writing, or product management backgrounds. Strong demonstrable portfolio (live LLM-powered apps, GitHub repos, technical blog posts about prompting) heavily weighted at hiring. M.Tech / M.Sc in CS or AI for research-heavy roles. Domain expertise (legal, medical, finance) combined with prompting craft is increasingly valued.
