Overview
Radiologists are MD doctors who interpret medical imaging — X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, PET, mammography, interventional procedures — to diagnose disease and guide minimally invasive treatments. Distinct from radiology technologists (who operate the equipment), radiologists do the interpretation and reporting. India's diagnostic imaging market has grown sharply with diagnostic chains (Mahajan Imaging, Lal PathLabs, SRL, Apollo Diagnostics) plus growing teleradiology (Indian radiologists reading scans for US/UK overnight). Interventional radiology is among the highest-paying medical specialties globally.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Interpret CT scans, MRI, X-rays, ultrasound, mammography, PET scans; write detailed radiological reports; perform image-guided procedures (biopsies, drainage, embolisation) in interventional radiology; conduct ultrasound examinations including obstetric, abdominal, vascular; consult with referring physicians on imaging findings; manage radiology department workflow; supervise PG residents; participate in multidisciplinary tumour boards; ensure radiation safety protocols.
Skills required
- Cross-sectional anatomy (CT, MRI)
- Pattern recognition for diseases on imaging
- Modality-specific interpretation (US, X-ray, CT, MRI, nuclear)
- Interventional procedures (biopsy, embolisation, drainage)
- Knowledge of imaging protocols and indications
- Report writing — clear, structured, actionable
- Radiation safety and AERB regulations
- Teleradiology workflow tools (PACS, RIS)
Education path
MBBS (5.5 years) → NEET PG → MD Radiodiagnosis or DNB Radiology (3 years). Total ~8.5 years. Super-specialisation: DM/FNB Interventional Radiology (3 years for DM), Fellowship in Neuroradiology, Body Imaging, Musculoskeletal Radiology. Top training: AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER, JIPMER, CMC Vellore, KEM Mumbai, AFMC Pune. Teleradiology certifications for cross-border practice (US-RAD, UK).
