Medical education at Banaras Hindu University traces back to a Department of Ayurveda established in 1920. In 1960 this grew into the College of Medical Sciences under founder-principal Professor K. N. Udupa, starting with nine departments of modern medicine and one of Indian medicine. The Medical Council of India recognised the MBBS programme in 1963, and in 1971, after postgraduate training was added, the college was upgraded to its present name, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS BHU). Doctor of Medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) courses across ten super-specialties were approved in 1976.
IMS BHU is one of the constituent institutes of Banaras Hindu University, a central university established by an Act of Parliament in 1915. The institute today comprises three faculties, Modern Medicine, Dental Sciences and Ayurveda, together with a School of Nursing, spread across 45 departments, including ten super-specialty departments in modern medicine, four in dentistry and eleven in Ayurveda. Because it sits inside a central university rather than functioning as a standalone medical college, students share a campus with BHU's other faculties in science, engineering, arts, law and management.
In August 2018, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Education signed a memorandum of understanding to extend AIIMS-level grant-in-aid and infrastructure support to IMS BHU under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the scheme used to set up new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences. The funding supported new Super Specialty Blocks, a Trauma Centre and a Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, and set up faculty and student exchange arrangements with AIIMS, New Delhi. The institute kept its own name and continues to be governed under the BHU Act rather than becoming a separate AIIMS.
All MBBS admissions at IMS BHU go through NEET-UG and are filled entirely from the All India Quota by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), with 100 MBBS seats offered each year. BDS, BAMS, BSc Nursing and a range of postgraduate MD, MS, MDS and super-specialty DM and MCh programmes are also offered, admitted through the relevant national counselling bodies for each stream. In NIRF 2025, Banaras Hindu University was ranked 6th nationally in the Medical category with an overall score of 70.05.
Clinical teaching and patient care at IMS BHU are centred on Sir Sunderlal Hospital, the institute's teaching hospital on the BHU campus, which also functions as a major referral centre for the wider Varanasi and eastern Uttar Pradesh region.
IMS BHU is a constituent institute of Banaras Hindu University, a central university established by an Act of Parliament in 1915, giving medical students access to a large multidisciplinary campus alongside science, engineering, arts and law faculties.
Banaras Hindu University, under which IMS BHU is assessed, was ranked 6th nationally in the NIRF 2025 Medical category with an overall score of 70.05.
A 2018 tripartite memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Ministry of Education and BHU extended AIIMS-level grant-in-aid to IMS BHU under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, funding new Super Specialty Blocks, a Trauma Centre and a Regional Institute of Ophthalmology.
The institute runs 45 departments across Modern Medicine, Dental Sciences and Ayurveda, plus a School of Nursing, offering MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BSc Nursing and postgraduate MD, MS, MDS, DM and MCh programmes.
The institute's official fee schedule lists total MBBS tuition of roughly Rs 1.24 lakh for the full course, far below fees charged by private medical colleges in India.
Honest caveat: Admission is extremely competitive because only 100 MBBS seats are filled every year, entirely through the NEET-UG All India Quota, and recent general category closing ranks have been in the low thousands, so a very high NEET score is needed to qualify.
Varanasi's distance from many parts of India, along with a hot summer climate and a dense old city environment around the campus, can also be a practical adjustment for students from other regions. Current aggregate figures for total student enrollment, total faculty strength and a separately assessed NAAC grade for IMS specifically could not be confirmed on BHU's or IMS's own websites at the time of writing, so those fields have been left blank rather than estimated.

IMS BHU provides on campus hostel accommodation for its MBBS, BDS, BAMS, nursing and postgraduate students, separate from the wider Banaras Hindu University hostel system used by arts and science students. The National Medical Commission's institutional disclosure record for the college confirms student hostel accommodation is operational on the medical campus, and named facilities such as Sushruta Hostel house students and resident doctors attached to departments like the Trauma Centre.
