Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) is an autonomous postgraduate and super-specialty medical institute in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, established under the SGPGIMS Act 1983, a State Legislature Act of Uttar Pradesh. Its foundation stone was laid on 14 December 1980 by then President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy. SGPGI does not run an MBBS programme; it trains only at the postgraduate, super-specialty, and doctoral level (MD, MS, DM, M.Ch, MHA, PhD, and post-doctoral fellowships).
Under its founding Act the institute functions with the powers of a State University, awarding its own degrees directly rather than being affiliated to a university. The Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh serves as President of the institute and the Governor of Uttar Pradesh as Visitor.

SGPGI's residential campus on Raebareli Road houses thirteen hostels. Nine sit within the MRA PG hostel complex, allocated by category to MD/MS/MHA junior residents, DM/M.Ch candidates, married postgraduates, and PhD/post-doctoral researchers. A further four hostels serve students of the affiliated College of Medical Technology and College of Nursing.
SGPGI runs no MBBS programme. Every seat is DM, M.Ch, MD, MS, MHA, or PhD, so residents train on a high-volume tertiary referral caseload from day one.
SGPGI moved from rank 7 (2023, score 69.62) to rank 6 (2024, score 70.07) to rank 5 (2025, score 70.09), a three-year improving trend.
Assessed by NAAC in November 2024 and received an A++ grade, the first government medical institution in Uttar Pradesh to do so.
Departments span cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, hepatology, neurology, neurosurgery, urology, and medical and radiation oncology, alongside dedicated centres such as the Advance Diabetics Center.
As an institute created by its own State Legislature Act, SGPGI sets its own curriculum and awards its own degrees, structurally similar to AIIMS-type institutes.
