Of the 250 MBBS seats, 85 percent are UP state quota seats, which require UP domicile. Students from outside Uttar Pradesh compete only for the 15 percent AIQ seats (37-38 seats), and the AIQ general category closing AIR in 2024 was 2,059 (Round 3 final), placing it among the most competitive MBBS admissions in India after AIIMS campuses and a few central institutes. State quota candidates from UP competed for 212 seats at a closing AIR of approximately 3,484 (general category), which is still within the top 0.4 percent of NEET-UG scorers.
KGMU does not have NRI or management quota seats. Admission is purely merit-based through NEET.
MBBS "placement" at government medical colleges follows a different pathway from engineering or management: graduates typically appear for NEET-PG to pursue MD/MS residency, join UP government medical service cadre, or enter private hospital employment. The NIRF-reported median of Rs 12 LPA and highest of Rs 30 LPA reflect these outcomes, not traditional corporate campus recruitment. Students planning postgraduate medical careers should factor in the bond obligation: KGMU MD/MS graduates face a two-year government service bond with a Rs 40 lakh penalty for breach.
The campus is located in the Chowk area of central Lucknow, a dense urban neighbourhood. There is no isolated residential campus; hostel facilities are within the campus perimeter but the surrounding area is a busy commercial zone. Students from outside Lucknow adapt to this urban environment quickly given the strong campus community.

KGMU's campus spans approximately 160 acres in the Chowk area of central Lucknow (the broader campus including the hospital complex; the core academic buildings occupy approximately 25 acres). The campus is fully enclosed within the Chowk locality, adjacent to Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
Twenty-one residential hostels operate on campus, with separate blocks for boys and girls. Hostel rooms are furnished (bed, chair, table, cupboard) with Wi-Fi connectivity, 24-hour electricity backup, laundry facilities, a canteen, and on-campus medical services. Room rent is among the lowest of any NIRF Top-10 medical college: double room at Rs 4,900/year and single room at Rs 7,100/year. Mess charges are billed separately at approximately Rs 3,000/month.
The teaching hospital, Gandhi Memorial and Associated Hospitals, operates over 4,250 beds across the main hospital, Lari Cardiology Hospital, Shatabdi Trauma Centre, and Kiran Nursing Home. Additional facilities include a 24-hour Poison Information Centre, an eye bank, the Centre of Excellence in Oncology, a radiotherapy unit, and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Scientific Convention Centre for national and international medical conferences. Imaging infrastructure includes 3-Tesla MRI and high-resolution CT systems.
The university's central library holds an extensive print collection of medical and dental journals and textbooks, with digital access to major medical databases. Sports facilities are present but limited relative to multi-faculty campuses.

King George's Medical College held its formal opening on 27 January 1912, having been established in 1905 and named after King George V. It became one of Uttar Pradesh's main public medical institutions through the 20th century, evolving from a colonial-era college into the state's foremost medical teaching campus. The institution received autonomous university status as King George's Medical University (KGMU) in 2002 under the Government of Uttar Pradesh. In 2003 it was briefly renamed Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University before reverting to KGMU in 2004.
NAAC assessed KGMU at A++ grade (CGPA 3.67 out of 4.0) in Cycle 2 in August 2025, the highest accreditation grade. NIRF 2025 ranks it 8th nationally in the Medical category with a score of 68.77, a significant improvement from 19th in 2024. The Graduate Outcomes sub-score of 90.3 out of 100 reflects KGMU's strong record of MBBS graduate progression to MD/MS, government service, and clinical practice. The Dental category rank of 7th confirms strength across both medical and dental education.
KGMU's teaching hospital, Gandhi Memorial and Associated Hospitals, operates over 4,250 beds and serves as one of the largest public hospitals in Uttar Pradesh, providing clinical exposure to students from the first year. The super-specialty infrastructure includes Lari Cardiology Hospital, Shatabdi Trauma Centre, Centre of Excellence in Oncology, a 24-hour Poison Information Centre, and robotic surgical systems. The hospital's volume and case diversity are structural advantages in medical education.
Admission to MBBS is through NEET-UG. Of the 250 MBBS seats, 85 percent (212-213 seats) fill through UP state counselling (UPDGME/upneet.gov.in) requiring UP domicile, and 15 percent (37-38 seats) fill through MCC All-India Quota counselling (mcc.nic.in). KGMU has no NRI quota or management quota; it is a fully government university.
The annual MBBS fee of Rs 54,600 makes KGMU approximately 30-35 times cheaper than a comparably ranked private medical college. For a five-year academic programme, the total tuition is approximately Rs 2.73 lakh, comparable to one semester's fee at many private medical institutions.
Exposure to high case volumes, Lari Cardiology Hospital, Shatabdi Trauma Centre, Cancer Centre, and robotic surgery from Year 1 builds clinical competence that pre-clinical students at smaller hospitals cannot access. NIRF Graduate Outcomes score of 90.3 confirms this translates to outcomes.
KGMU offers 364 or more postgraduate MD/MS seats across 25+ specialisations. An MBBS graduate with a strong NEET-PG score can pursue the full MBBS-to-MD pathway at one institution, with familiarity of the hospital, faculty, and systems already in place.
NAAC's Cycle 2 assessment in August 2025 awarded A++, the highest grade, across teaching-learning, research, and institutional functioning. This is the same grade held by IITs and the top IIMs, and independently confirms quality beyond NIRF rankings.
Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Neurosurgery, Urology, and Surgical Oncology DM/M.Ch programmes at KGMU allow a complete academic progression from MBBS to super-speciality without leaving the institution.
