VJTI Mumbai began in 1887 as the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, formed from the Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering and the Ripon Textile School. Electrical Engineering was added in 1903, Technical and Applied Chemistry in 1906 and Sanitary Engineering in 1913. The institute moved to its present Matunga campus in 1923 and was renamed Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute in 1997, after Rajmata Jijabai, the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Today VJTI is an academically and administratively autonomous institute of the Government of Maharashtra, affiliated with the University of Mumbai for its degree awards. It runs nine B.Tech branches (Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunication, Information Technology, Mechanical, Production and Textile Technology), 18 M.Tech specialisations across these departments plus newer areas such as IoT and Defence Technology, an MCA programme, and full-time and part-time Ph.D. research.
Admission to VJTI is almost entirely through Maharashtra's Centralised Admission Process (CAP), run by the state's Directorate of Technical Education and CET Cell. B.Tech and MCA seats are filled on MHT-CET percentile and rank, while M.Tech seats require a valid GATE score, all processed through the same state counselling system rather than a separate institute application.
The institute has a long-documented placement record maintained by its Training and Placement Office, and its research output includes sponsored projects, consultancy work and patents reported each year to the Ministry of Education's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), where VJTI has featured in the Engineering rank band for several consecutive years.
VJTI traces its history to 1887 as the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, making it one of the earliest engineering and technical schools established in India, well before independence.
In AY 2024-25, VJTI placed 552 of 674 eligible B.Tech students (82%), with the Computer Engineering branch averaging Rs 16.35 LPA and a highest offer of Rs 54 LPA, per the official Training and Placement Office report.
VJTI runs 18 M.Tech specialisations spanning structural engineering, AI and data science, embedded systems, IoT and defence technology, alongside 110 full-time and 66 part-time Ph.D. scholars as reported in its NIRF 2025 filing.
As a government-aided autonomous institute, VJTI keeps its officially notified fees low, with the AY 2025-26 B.Tech first-year fee for the Open category set at Rs 86,176 total, well below private engineering college fees in Mumbai.
The institute has occupied its current Matunga campus since 1923 and provides on-campus hostel blocks for both men and women, with dedicated mess and security arrangements for resident students.
Honest caveat: Admission to VJTI runs almost entirely through Maharashtra's MHT-CET based Centralised Admission Process, and most seats carry a Maharashtra-domicile requirement. Out-of-state candidates who have only appeared for JEE and not MHT-CET have very limited entry routes, largely restricted to small All-India, NRI, OCI, PIO, FN and CIWGC quotas per branch. The Matunga campus has also occupied the same compact urban plot since 1923, which limits large-scale physical expansion compared with newer suburban engineering campuses.

VJTI runs on-campus hostels for both men and women, including a PG Boys Hostel and separate Girls Hostels in A-Block and B-Block, each with mess facilities, internet connectivity and security. Room sharing is denser in the first year and reduces in later years, and hostel fees are billed separately from academic fees under the institute's official fee structure.
