Overview
Agricultural engineers work on farm mechanisation, irrigation systems, post-harvest processing, food storage, and agri-tech solutions. India's agriculture remains the largest employer (still 45% of workforce) but is rapidly modernising: drip and sprinkler irrigation expansion, farm machinery (Mahindra Tractors, John Deere, Sonalika, Escorts Kubota), the agri-tech wave (Ninjacart, DeHaat, AgroStar, CropIn, Intello Labs), and post-harvest infrastructure under the ₹1 lakh crore Agri Infra Fund. ICAR institutes, agricultural universities, NABARD, and state agriculture departments provide steady government employment.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design irrigation systems (surface, sprinkler, drip); develop farm machinery and implements; plan post-harvest processing infrastructure (cold chain, grain storage, milling); conduct soil and water conservation engineering; design farm structures (greenhouses, poultry sheds, dairy parlours); advise farmers on mechanisation and protected cultivation; evaluate agri-tech solutions for adoption; lead extension programmes through KVKs (Krishi Vigyan Kendras).
Skills required
- Soil and water engineering
- Farm machinery design and operation
- Irrigation system design (drip, sprinkler, surface)
- Post-harvest engineering (cold chain, storage, processing)
