Overview
Agricultural scientists research and develop crop varieties, soil management, plant protection, post-harvest technology, animal sciences, and farming systems. India's agricultural research ecosystem is anchored by ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the world's largest agricultural research system with 100+ institutes) plus state agricultural universities (PAU Ludhiana, GBPUAT Pantnagar, TNAU Coimbatore, UAS Bengaluru, ANGRAU Hyderabad). Demand has grown with the agri-tech wave, climate-resilient agriculture priorities, and the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture. Distinct from agricultural engineers (who work on machinery and irrigation), agricultural scientists focus on biological and chemical aspects.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design and conduct field trials for new crop varieties; develop plant breeding programmes (conventional and biotechnology-aided); analyse soil chemistry and fertility; develop integrated pest management (IPM) strategies; conduct animal nutrition and breeding research; develop post-harvest preservation techniques; collaborate with extension teams (KVKs); publish in peer-reviewed journals; manage research grants; participate in policy advisory.
Skills required
- Plant breeding (conventional + molecular markers)
- Soil science and fertility
- Plant protection (IPM, pathology, entomology)
- Animal nutrition and breeding (for animal sciences track)
- Agronomy and crop management
- Statistical analysis (SAS, R, Statistix)
- Biotechnology and genomics tools
- GIS for agriculture
Education path
B.Sc Agriculture (4 years, Hons strongly preferred) from ICAR-accredited universities, followed by M.Sc Agriculture / specialisation (Plant Breeding, Soil Science, Agronomy, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Science, Food Science). PhD essential for ICAR Scientist positions (ARS — Agricultural Research Service exam). ICAR AIEEA UG / PG entrance is the primary admission pathway. Top institutes: ICAR-IARI Pusa, PAU Ludhiana, GBPUAT Pantnagar, TNAU Coimbatore, UAS Bengaluru.
Career progression

- 2Scientist (3-8 yrs, post-ARS or PhD)
- 3Senior Scientist (8-14 yrs)
- 4Principal Scientist (14-22 yrs)
- 5Director / National Fellow (22+ yrs)
