Overview
Environmental scientists study natural systems and human impact on them, advising on conservation, pollution control, climate change, and policy. Distinct from environmental engineers (who design treatment systems), environmental scientists focus on research, monitoring, ecological assessment, and policy. India's climate adaptation push, the ESG reporting mandate, the National Clean Air Programme, and the growing biodiversity conservation funding (BMGF, GEF, Green Climate Fund) have driven sharp High demand at MoEFCC bodies, research institutes (TERI, ATREE, WII, CES IISc), ESG consultancies, and corporate sustainability teams.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Conduct ecological surveys and biodiversity assessments; monitor air, water, and soil pollution; analyse data on greenhouse-gas emissions and climate impacts; prepare Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and ESG reports; advise on policy and mitigation strategies; lead community engagement on conservation; manage grant-funded research projects; publish in peer-reviewed journals; collaborate with NGOs, government, and corporates.
