Overview
Geologists study the Earth's structure, composition, and processes. India's mineral and hydrocarbon resources, the growing focus on critical minerals (lithium, rare earths, cobalt) for the EV transition, water resources management, earthquake / landslide risk assessment, and infrastructure projects (Char Dham road, hydropower) all create steady-to-high demand. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is the dominant government employer. Private demand spans ONGC, OIL India, Cairn, Vedanta, NMDC, mining companies, and increasingly the geotechnical consulting ecosystem.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Conduct field geological mapping using base maps and aerial / satellite imagery; collect rock, mineral, and soil samples; analyse samples in laboratory (petrography, geochemistry, palaeontology, hydrogeology); interpret seismic and remote-sensing data; prepare geological reports and economic reserve estimates; advise on mineral exploration, groundwater development, and engineering geology; participate in regional surveys for GSI / state mineral departments; collaborate on multi-disciplinary teams for natural-resource projects.
