Overview
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) Engineers design and maintain climate-control systems for commercial buildings, hospitals, industrial plants, data centres, hotels, malls, and pharmaceutical clean rooms. India's commercial real-estate boom, data centre expansion (CtrlS, Yotta, ESDS, NTT), pharmaceutical clean-room construction, and green-building movement (IGBC, LEED, GRIHA) drive sustained demand. Major employers: Voltas, Blue Star, Daikin India, Carrier India, Mitsubishi Electric, Honeywell, plus EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) firms (L&T, Tata Projects, Shapoorji Pallonji).
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design HVAC systems for buildings (chillers, AHUs, ducting, refrigeration); perform heat-load calculations using Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE 700, Hourly Analysis Program; select equipment per design requirements; supervise HVAC installation on construction sites; commission and test installed systems; manage indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy efficiency; maintain HVAC systems and troubleshoot operational issues; ensure compliance with ECBC (Energy Conservation Building Code), ASHRAE standards; certify systems for IGBC / LEED / GRIHA green-building certifications.
Skills required
- HVAC fundamentals (psychrometry, refrigeration cycles)
- Heat-load calculations (Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE)
- Equipment selection (chillers, VRF, AHU, FCU)
- Ducting and piping design
- Building automation systems (BAS) and BMS (Honeywell, Siemens, Schneider)
- Energy modelling and ECBC compliance
- Green-building certifications (IGBC, LEED, GRIHA)
- AutoCAD and Revit MEP
Education path
