Overview
Mechanical engineers design and build everything that moves — automobiles, aircraft, manufacturing plants, HVAC systems, robotics. Once seen as a "core" discipline overshadowed by IT, mechanical is reclaiming prestige with EVs (Tata, Ola, Ather), aerospace (HAL, ISRO), defence (Make-in-India) and Apple's manufacturing shift to India creating tens of thousands of openings.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design components in CAD (SolidWorks/CATIA); run FEA simulations (ANSYS); coordinate with shop floor on prototyping; quality-check incoming parts; develop test protocols; troubleshoot field failures; manage vendors and BOMs; for plant roles — supervise production lines and improve OEE.
Skills required
- CAD (SolidWorks/CATIA/Creo)
- FEA (ANSYS/Abaqus)
