Overview
Mining engineers plan and operate the extraction of coal, iron ore, bauxite, copper, zinc, limestone, and other minerals. India's mining sector remains substantial despite the energy transition: Coal India is the world's largest coal producer, NMDC is the largest iron ore producer, and Hindustan Zinc, Vedanta, Hindustan Copper, NALCO operate major non-coal mining operations. The mining workforce is restructuring with mechanisation, but specialised mining engineers in safety, ventilation, geomechanics, and mineral processing remain in steady demand.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design open-cast and underground mine layouts; plan blasting and material handling sequences; ensure ventilation and gas monitoring in underground mines; manage explosive licensing and PESO compliance; conduct geotechnical assessments of slopes and benches; supervise mineral processing operations; manage ML / EC compliance with MoEFCC and IBM (Indian Bureau of Mines); lead safety audits and DGMS compliance; coordinate with HEMM (heavy earth-moving machinery) operations.
