Petroleum Engineer

Overview

Petroleum engineers design and operate the systems for exploration, drilling, production, and refining of oil and natural gas. India's upstream and downstream oil and gas sector remains a steady employer despite the ongoing energy transition: ONGC, OIL India, Cairn / Vedanta, Reliance, Indian Oil, BPCL, HPCL all hire. Demand has shifted toward enhanced oil recovery, deepwater operations, and unconventional resources (CBM, shale gas), while the natural gas value chain (city gas distribution, LNG terminals, gas pipelines) is in active expansion under India's gas-based economy push.

Day-to-day responsibilities

Design drilling and completion programmes for wells; analyse reservoir performance and forecast production; supervise mud logging, MWD / LWD operations; design EOR (enhanced oil recovery) interventions; conduct nodal analysis and well productivity assessments; coordinate with geologists and geophysicists on reservoir characterisation; ensure HSE compliance on rigs and platforms; manage budgets for exploration and development programmes.
